Weta Digital is a world leading visual effects company based in Wellington, New Zealand. They provide a full suite of digital production services for feature films and high end commercials, from concept design to cutting edge 3D animation.


Last year these guys worked towards re-creating the amazing world of Middle Earth in the follow-up prequel to the Multi Award winning ‘The Lord of The Rings‘ Trilogy. Through their youtube channel they’ve released a buncha ‘VFX-of-Hobbit‘ videos, here for your perusal:

And finally here’s a leanghty look at Weta Digital’s Tissue, physically-based character sim framework recognized with a Scientific and Engineering Academy Award (Academy Plaque) at the Sci-Techs. The good people over at FXGuide sat down with two of the award recipients, Simon Clutterbuck and James Jacobs, who, along with Dr. Richard Dorling, developed the linear-elastic finite-element system to build muscles, skin, and fat for creatures in such films as ‘Avatar’, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, ‘Prometheus’ and ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’.
